Historic sites to host teen writers

Thank you Betty Chestney for making us aware of this project as featured in a recent article of the Poughkeepsie Journal.

The Hudson Valley Writing Project at SUNY-New Paltz and the National Park Service are collaborating to offer Project Write, a program that allows students in grades seven through 12 to explore and write at the inspiring homes of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, and the Vanderbilts. The project takes place 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 22-26. Another program for students, Documenting the Walkway over the Hudson, will be held July 15-19.

For more information call the Coordinating Director Diane Rawson at 845.943.8437.

March Madness . . .

While many of us are following our favorite high school and college basketball teams, it’s also been a busy month for the friends – adding new members as a result of our membership drive. Keep those new memberships coming! Every new member means we can bring you more programs and support our library and librarian. Some of us are also planning a May fundraiser, the Victorian Tea, sponsored by the Mashomack Game and Preserve, May 5, 2013, 2-4:30 PM. Tickets are $35 and are available at the Library, Hammertown, Deuel’s Home Center, and the Pine Plains Pharmacy. In addition to finding us on Facebook, we now have a Twitter account. You can follow us @friendsofppfl. We also added Goodreads to our website. In addition to our favorite, local, bookstore, Oblong Books and Music, you can connect with folks and get recommendations from this website. Vicky is currently reading In The Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson, a frightening revelation of Hitler and the years leading up to World War II. We’d love to hear about the books you are reading. The next meeting of the FRIENDS is Monday, April 8, 3:30 PM.

February is “Love Your Library Month”

Stop by the library and give a Valentine to the Library! Join the FRIENDS. Become a Volunteer in the Library! Be an Advocate for libraries.

FRIENDS packing up books for donations to local organizations

After our annual book sale, FRIENDS donate remaining books to a local hospital’s book cart and correction facilities in Dutchess and Columbia Counties. Unsaleable books are recycled through Habitat for Humanity to be made into insulation. We also continue to sell recently published books during regular library hours.
