Historic sites to host teen writers

Thank you Betty Chestney for making us aware of this project as featured in a recent article of the Poughkeepsie Journal.

The Hudson Valley Writing Project at SUNY-New Paltz and the National Park Service are collaborating to offer Project Write, a program that allows students in grades seven through 12 to explore and write at the inspiring homes of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, and the Vanderbilts. The project takes place 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 22-26. Another program for students, Documenting the Walkway over the Hudson, will be held July 15-19.

March Madness . . .

While many of us are following our favorite high school and college basketball teams, it’s also been a busy month for the friends – adding new members as a result of our membership drive. Keep those new memberships coming! Every new member means we can bring you more programs and support our library and librarian. Some of us are also planning a May fundraiser, the Victorian Tea, sponsored by the Mashomack Game and Preserve, May 5, 2013, 2-4:30 PM. Tickets are $35 and are available at the Library, Hammertown, Deuel’s Home Center, and the Pine Plains Pharmacy. In addition to finding us on Facebook, we now have a Twitter account. You can follow us @friendsofppfl. We also added Goodreads to our website. In addition to our favorite, local, bookstore, Oblong Books and Music, you can connect with folks and get recommendations from this website. Vicky is currently reading In The Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson, a frightening revelation of Hitler and the years leading up to World War II. We’d love to hear about the books you are reading. The next meeting of the FRIENDS is Monday, April 8, 3:30 PM.

February is “Love Your Library Month”

Stop by the library and give a Valentine to the Library! Join the FRIENDS. Become a Volunteer in the Library! Be an Advocate for libraries.

After our annual book sale, FRIENDS donate remaining books to a local hospital’s book cart and correction facilities in Dutchess and Columbia Counties. Unsaleable books are recycled through Habitat for Humanity to be made into insulation. We also continue to sell recently published books during regular library hours.

Book Discussion Group

  • The Pine Plains Free Library book discussion group’s next read is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. Henrietta Lacks, known to scientists as HeLa, was a poor, Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells -taken without her knowledge – became one of the most important tools in medicine. The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, they are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. Her cells are used throughout the medical profession having been bought and sold by the billions. Yet, Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown. Want to become part of this exciting group and share your thoughts and feelings about this novel? The next meeting is Valentine’s Day, Thursday, February 14, 2013.
  • Product DetailsThe library book discussion group begins The Promise of Stardust by Priscilla Sibley on the second Thursday in April, 2013. Matt Beaulieu has loved Elle McClure since he was two years old. Now married and expecting their first child, Elle suffers a fatal accident. To keep the baby alive, Matt goes against his wife’s wishes and keeps his wife on life support. But Matt’s mother thinks that Elle should be euthanized, and she’s ready to fight for what she believes is the right thing – an examination of one of the most intricate ethical issues of our time.
  • How to Eat a CupcakeThe May Book Discussion Group selection is Meg Donohue’s How to Eat A  Cupcake. Free-spirited Annie Quintana and sophisticated Julia St. Clair come from two different worlds. Yet, as the daughter of the St. Clair’s housekeeper, Annie grew up in Julia’s San Francisco mansion and they forged a bond that only two little girls oblivious to class differences could – until a life altering betrayal destroyed their friendship. A decade later, Annie bakes to fill the void left in her heart by her mother’s death, and a painful secret jeopardizes Julia’s engagement to the man she loves. A chance reunion prompts the unlikely duo to open a cupcakery, but when a mysterious saboteur opens up old wounds, they must finally face the truth about their past or risk losing everything.

What Are You Reading?

  • Vicky is currently reading Lincoln : Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin. I decided to read this novel after seeing the movie by the same name.  Both are an excellent history lesson. Never knew how complicated it was to get the 13th amendment passed. Maybe our current congress should take some lessons in compromise and collaboration.
  • Our library community is also enjoying Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose. In this sweeping adventure story, Stephen Ambrose presents the definitive account of one of the most momentous journeys in American history. Ambrose follows the Lewis and Clark Expedition from Thomas Jefferson’s hope of finding a waterway to the Pacific, through the heart-stopping moments of the actual trip, to Lewis’s lonely demise on the Natchez Trace. Along the way, Ambrose shows us the American West as Lewis saw it – wild, awesome, and pristinely beautiful.
